Undersheriff Stu Nay

Stu Nay began his career in 1980 when he was hired by then Clear Creek County Sheriff E.E. (Gene) Kiefer. Stu was hired as a jail deputy. In 1983 he was transferred to the patrol division. Stu graduated from the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy in December of 1983.

In the fall of 1984, Stu was hired by the Idaho Springs Police Department. Stu advanced through the ranks of Patrol Officer, Sergeant and then as the Chief of Police.

In 1996 Stu retired from the department while holding the rank of Chief.

Stu then joined the Black Hawk, Colorado Police Department where he was a Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, Driving Instructor and Defensive Tactics Instructor.

In early 2001 Stu was appointed by Sheriff Krueger as the Undersheriff for the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office.

Undersheriff Nay oversees all of the Sheriff’s Office operational divisions; Patrol, Detentions, Investigations, Communications, Records, Special Services and all of the agency’s field training programs.

Undersheriff Nay actively participates with some of the specialized teams with in the Sheriff’s Office. He is qualified as a Crew Boss-trainee for the Sheriff’s Wild land fire crew aptly named T.H.E. (The High Elevation) Marmots hand crew. Undersheriff Nay is also an active member on the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team and is trained for the specialized response to Ice Rescue and Swift Water rescue.

Undersheriff Nay just recently ended 19 years of service for the Clear Creek County Coroner’s office where he served as a Deputy Coroner and Investigator for that agency.
Stu is still on the roster for the Clear Creek Fire Authority. He started his fire service in April of 1980 with the Idaho Springs Volunteer Fire Department. He served in several capacities with the I.S.F.D. from firefighter, to Lieutenant, spent over a decade as Captain and the several years as the Assistant Fire Chief. Stu was one of the three co-founders of the Swift Water Rescue team which started in 1983. Stu fought several structure fires where he was assigned to fire suppression inside those structures. Stu also spent several years teaching automobile and heavy extrication.
